Job Description

Warranty Technicians will be expected to work as part of a team to ensure that the fleet of 3GT Birmingham Tram rolling stock vehicles are operating effectively, reliable, and available for passenger service. 

As a Warranty Technician you will be working on light rail vehicles URBOS 100 3GT Trams and will carry out a variety of tasks during their shift including: Use of electrical schematics, test and measuring equipment, diagnostic software to identify the root cause of tram failures, use electronic management systems, perform corrective actions and repairs. Whilst adhering to all safety procedures.

Functions and responsibilities

Carry out root cause fault finding on the vehicles and corrective actions in a timely manner to ensure passenger service availability and reliability requirement are achieved. Systems include:

  • Traction, OESS and Brakes
  • PIS and CCTV
  • Networks
  • Passenger access doors
  • HVAC’s
  • Auxiliary electrical systems
  • High pressure Hydraulics
  • HV and Pantograph
  • High Voltage systems
  • Complex cab control systems
  • Safety critical systems
  • Event recording and on-board diagnostics
  • Bogies and gearboxes
  • Wiring and integration of circuit breakers, relays, transformers, insulators, cabinets, motors, and other associated electrical parts
  • Monitoring vehicle performance during service using remote fleet management and diagnostic tools and highlight any issues to Team Leader.Act as Stand-in as Team Leader as required.
  • Carry out Campaigns, Fleet Checks and Modifications as required in accordance with instructions.
  • Record accurate information of all tasks carried out onto the computerised maintenance management system.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives to processes and procedures.
  • Contribute to good depot housekeeping and adhere to health and safety, quality and environmental standards in accordance with CAF UK procedures.
  • Flexibility to travel to other depots on occasion and carry out live test runs to aid fault finding or confirm repairs.

Training required

NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in Electrical/ Mechanical Engineering

Required professional experience

  • Fault finding and root cause analysis.
  • Able to interpret electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic schematics.
  • Use of diagnostic software
  • Use of test and measurement equipment
  • 3 years post apprenticeship experience
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Available for shift work (nights and weekends included)

Technical and/or practical knowledge valued

  • Computer literacy
  • Able to demonstrate experience of electrical/mechanical fault finding.
  • Work in a safe manner adhering to H&S policies.
