Job Description

My client are an independent firm of designers, planners, engineers, consultants and technical specialists offering a broad range of professional services. Through their work, they make a positive difference in the world, priding themselves on blending creativity with strong strategic and technical capabilities. They help clients create projects and programmes looking holistically across strategy and policy reform, future rail contracts, heavy and light rail operational planning, economics, funding and implementation.

This Senior Consultant role will support the development of our City Economics and Planning business and capability in London, across the UK, and internationally. We are seeking an experienced professional who can work across government, the private sector, and consultancy, with strong quantitative and econometrics skills (especially in policy and programme evaluation) and a background in one or more of urban economics, local economic growth, transport and environmental economics to join our growing Integrated City Planning team in London.

About you

  • We are looking for people that can advise clients and oversee complex analytical projects and quantitative policy and programme evaluations, with a real passion for thought leadership and applied economic analysis.
  • Experience in designing and applying quantitative evaluation techniques and quasi-experimental approaches (e.g., difference in differences or synthetic control group methods) is essential.
  • The ability to identify and manage suitable sources of data is especially welcome. We expect that you will work with us to deliver sustainable, socially-inclusive and economically sustainable solutions for our clients. You will lead projects, bids, business development tasks, thought leadership assignments, and will be project manager for a range of types of projects.

Role & Responsibilities

  • Work on high-profile projects urban economics, local economic growth, transport and environmental economics for a range of public and private sector clients, taking personal responsibility for developing quantitative approaches and solutions.
  • Manage project and bid teams to deliver high quality outputs and directly prepare bids, client submissions, and presentations.
  • Lead delivery of good quality work on time and within budget, managing client relationships on projects, ensuring projects are delivered within the parameters of the Arup Management System.
  • Undertake research and analysis as part of a project team and keep up to date with literature developments and best practice in applied econometrics and quantitative evaluation.
  • Help to win work, and to widen our brief.

Essential

  • Experience in (one or more of) urban economics, local economic growth, transport and environmental economics, and passion the subject.
  • Proven experience in quantitative economic analysis, econometrics and robust counterfactual evaluation approaches.
  • Experience of conducting quantitative and econometric analysis using a variety of packages for econometric and statistical analysis (e.g, R, Stata, Python, Matlab…).
  • Strong grasp of the economic policy agenda, including initiatives relating to levelling up, transport and infrastructure, decarbonisation, economic inequality and social value.
