Job Description

The Quality team independently support and govern the maintenance, overhaul, upgrades, and servicing of fleets of trains operating out of 30+ sites across the UK&I. Through the deployment of our Quality Management Systems we maintain our regulatory standards for the Services business and act as the conscience for the business, raising awareness and supporting the deployment of corrective action as necessary. The team also plays a fundamental role in the management and resolution of all Railway Safety Issues and project execution.

Purpose of role

We have an exciting opportunity for a Project Quality and Safety Manager (PrQSM) to support Services Projects in the Midlands area covering Etches Park, Crofton, Central Rivers and Nottingham.

The site requires a Quality Leader to provide the local management team with the quality and product safety guidance to ensure that Overhaul and Maintenance activities are right first time - every time.

Project Quality and Safety Managers are a critical role in driving safety, quality, and customer satisfaction. Activities shall include the quality assurance of trains entering service through the Product Introduction Process to ensure customer satisfaction, and therefore the maximisation of cash into the company.

In this role you’ll be the primary point of contact for the Customer, Project Director and General Manager on all aspects of the Alstom Quality and Product Safety processes and shall ensure customer satisfaction through the development and application of the Project Quality and Safety Plans.

You’ll ensure that Safety, Reliability and Quality problems are managed and resolved using appropriate tools such as the Quality Portal and shall ensure that 8D (PST) entries are managed within strict time limits by advising the Project Director of potential risks. You’ll also ensure quality through the strict application of the Development for Quality (DfQ) processes applicable to the contract type. In ensuring quality, you’ll ensure that liabilities and contract penalties due to poor quality are minimised.

What are my key responsibilities?

  • Support the Project Team to ensure the project Safety, Quality assurance by coordinating all quality and safety activities throughout the project (SQCDP)
  • Be the interface with the Customer quality and safety teams
  • Establish the Project Quality plan and ensure the proper application during contract execution
  • Project execution controls by supporting the project teams and the PM to prepare gate reviews and follow up related action plans
  • Measure and improve project quality performance
  • Support the measurement and reduction of the Cost of Non-Quality
  • Facilitation of Safety Design Reviews and 5 Why analysis for any No-Go Gate Reviews

What do I need to qualify for this job?

Due to our acquisition of Bombardier Transportation in 2021, our team is going through a growth phase along with the business having a strong portfolio of fleets with future projects such as HS2 coming into service around 2026.

The role is a versatile role with interaction across all parts of the business and direct reporting lines into senior management. The role will require frequent travel to different sites and will require good communication skills as it requires collaborative working with operations and numerous support functions.

Your industrial experience will be in rail and involve holding a similar position such as a Quality/Continuous Improvement/Operational role with demonstrable transferrable skills. You’ll need to have a background in electro-mechanical engineering and have a broad understanding of commonly used Quality Tools and Techniques ((8D, PFMEA, Risk Analysis) and an understanding of Human Factors and how they relate to quality and safety.

Additional Essential Attributes

  • Mobile and willing to travel to other depots as required by the role.
  • Willingness to develop to Chartered membership of the CQI if not already a member
  • Good interpersonal/communication skills at all levels from shop floor to the boardroom.
