Net Zero Emissions Specialist

Job Description

RSSB helps drive improvements across the GB rail system through the Sustainable Rail Blueprint including achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050. This post offers a unique opportunity to help shape a key transport sector and work across multiple stakeholders to overcome significant technical challenges.

RSSB is seeking an experienced carbon practitioner with a diverse technical, project management and stakeholder engagement background to help the rail industry meet its net zero targets. The Net Zero Emissions Specialist will support or manage a range of initiatives across carbon accounting and standards, digital system development, engagement, training and guidance, management systems and GHG mitigation. Many projects are delivered by internal or external specialists and coordination and oversight of specialists is a significant aspect of the role.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, lead or support carbon focused technical projects
  • Manage stakeholder relationships to maximise the impact and accepatance of research outputs, tools and guidance
  • Attend different project steering groups and industry working group meetings, provide expert opinion on decarbonisation issues as appropriate.
  • Work collaboratively with relevant government departments (e.g.(Department for Transport, BEIS) and rail companies such as Network Rail on the development of projects, systems and policies.
  • Contribute to the embedding and evolution of the Sustainable Rail Blueprint as appropriate.
  • Provide occasional support to other sustainability leads including RSSB’s parallel air quality workstream as and when required
  • Work or manage appointed suppliers
  • Guide, oversee and undertake carbon data analysis, model and guidance development and reporting.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Effective communication (including presentation) skills
  • Experience in managing teams and working across organisational structures
  • Effective analytical skills and ability to spot trends in data and issues with data handling or quality
  • Able to think strategically and present findings effectively
  • Well organised and able to prioritise their own workload with minimal supervision
  • Understanding of the key carbon related methodologies including a working knowledge of the SBTi, PAS2080 and the Greenhouse Gas Protocols for organisations and products
  • Experience developing carbon models for a variety of applications (e.g. inventories, mitigation analysis, lifecycle assessments)
  • Track record of successful delivery of emissions related projects to key clients.
  • Fundamental skills in excel, powerpoint and word
  • Have a degree or masters degree in a relevant field or equivalent experience

Desirable

  • Environmental, financial transportation consulting experience
  • Previous experience or understanding of the transportation or Infrastructure sector
  • Financial applications of carbon management (e.g.carbon price, MACs)
  • Experience of developing Net Zero and/or carbon offset or removal strategies.
  • Software skills (e.g. Power Bi, Python, data bases, optimisation, Ai)
  • GHG system or inventory auditing experience and/or certification.
  • Experience of embedding sustainability strategies, systems or knowledge into organisations.
  • Stakeholder management or engagement skills.
  • Experience of developing or delivering training, especially in carbon or sustainability.
