Job Description


We have an exciting new Materials Manager vacancy on our Docklands Light Railway Project. This role of Materials Manager is to support project operations in delivering materials and services as and when required to maintain fleet service. They will report directly to the Project Operations Manager for direction and priorities and will work closely with both the Stores/Logistics and Procurement functions to fulfil all responsibilities.

We are looking for someone who works well as part of a team, has excellent organisational skills, demonstrates effective communication skills, and presents good commercial acumen. The successful applicant will need to be flexible in their approach and is able to hit the ground running, using their own initiative and responding well to deadlines.

The successful candidate will have previous Materials Management experience and experience within an Engineering or Rail environment is desirable.


The annual salary for this role is £50,000, depending upon experience. Please see our excellent employee benefits listed below.



  • Responsible for ensuring all depot materials and services are available to facilitate operations and the maintenance activities for the project
  • Monitor and maintain the ERP system, providing quality and accurate information
  • Liaise with Category Managers to ensure correct sourcing of components, the scheduling of OH activities and requirements that comply with specifications
  • Negotiate with suppliers to ensure service levels and repair float stocks are maintained for the project
  • Monitor supplier performance against lead times, quality, service and delivery and produce analytics to drive improvement
  • Continually review stock holding levels and set minimum order levels based on stock availability, supplier lead times and consumption rates
  • Liaise with Procurement Department and Suppliers to order materials and services in a timely manner to ensure fleet performance is maintained
  • Liaise with Stores and Logistics Department to order stock in a timely manner and ensure that minimum holding quantities are maintained, and risk is avoided for fleet operations
  • Participate and coordinate stock taking and control activities with regular review of CAF & Client ERP systems for accuracy
  • Carry out all stores, logistics and procurement related activities in compliance with CAF procedures and ISO and Industry standards
  • Generate analytics and KPI’s for material consumptions and report to Operations Managers and Head of Departments
  • Liaise with CAF internal depts to provide best possible project and operational support in relation to materials and services provision, including providing improvements and solutions.
  • Engage with Clients Representatives and CAF Operations Manager daily to ensure all materials operations comply with contractual obligations
  • Assess and support to ensure all the Material Controllers on depot are trained in CAF Procedures and systems
  • Ensure all staff are trained and certified before undertaking any logistics and stores activities
  • Assist with any Stores and Logistics and Procurement staff training as and when required


  • 3rd Level qualification in a relevant Business or Engineering discipline
  • CIPS qualified or working towards is desirable


    • Proven previous experience in a Materials Management Role
    • Previous experience working in an Engineering or Rail environment is desirable
    • Understanding of Mechanical & Electrical systems and components is desirable
    • Clear communication skills
    • Computer literate with experience of logistic and stock control systems
    • Good numeracy, literacy, IT skills and
    • High organisational skills and attention to detail
    • Good commercial acumen
    • Flexibility and ability to work under own initiative and to deadlines
