Job Description

Role Purpose: 

  • To support Midland Metro Ltd.’s mission which is to provide a safe, reliable and dependable tram service.
  • To manage the team of Maintenance Technicians delivering a safe, effective, efficient and professional tram maintenance, repair and overhaul service for the West Midlands Metro rolling stock assets.
  • To ensure the required number of trams are made available for service each day.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Support rolling stock maintenance management in the delivery of the production plan, ensuring exam tasks are completed in a timely manner and in compliance with the maintenance schedule.
  • Performing maintenance and repair activities on the trams, working on systems incorporating mechanical, electrical, electronic, hydraulic and pneumatic equipment, in accordance with the vehicle maintenance instructions and departmental procedures.
  • Performing corrective maintenance on the trams, which includes troubleshooting, fault finding and diagnosis techniques using computer equipment, on-tram diagnostics systems and electrical test equipment.
  • Attend to in service failures ensuring minimal disruption to the network.
  • Plan, coordinate, prepare and distribute maintenance tasks efficiently to the team in accordance with the maintenance plan.
  • Plan bogie and vehicle maintenance on a distance and time basis.
  • Maintain a culture of continuous improvement to enhance the working environment and performance in the workshop.
  • Adopt a one team approach within maintenance management.
  • Develop and maintain a culture of a high standard of housekeeping, ensuring the depot work area is clean and tidy, working material is located correctly, waste materials are appropriately disposed of, tools are stored correctly, faults and defects with Depot facilities are reported promptly.
  • Implement and maintain a daily team briefing including key performance indicators.
  • Carry out the administration associated with fleet management, (time sheets, goods in receipts, invoices, handle work orders, near miss, accident forms, in an efficient and timely manner).
  • Carry out regular one to one meetings with team members.
  • In conjunction with the HR Manager, Rolling Stock Manager and Depot Team Leader/Production Manager, manage performance within the team, recognising good performance and providing support when performance does not achieve the required level.
  • Health & safety – Ensuring the correct working practices are being followed and all required PPE equipment is being used, at all times.
  • Support the continued development of the safety management system (SMS). Ensuring all shop floor requirements are captured and delivered.
  • Responsible for a team of maintenance technicians and apprentices, ensuring that all work carried out complies with the required technical standards.
  • Responsible for ensuring quality assurance within the team and that all work is carried out to a high standard.
  • Liaise with the stores team to ensure parts (including new and repairable items) are available to complete the work. Ensuring correct procedures are followed, ensuring that materials are recorded and / or returned to the stores for repair. 
  • Comply with departmental procedures for management of spare parts, consumables, tools and equipment.
  • Ensuring team members record all work activities accurately including all preventative and corrective maintenance tasks on paper records and/or in the Asset Management Information System (AMIS).
  • Ensuring team members accurately report and record details of fault finding and diagnosis.
  • Undertaking training and competence assessments as required.
  • Ensuring staff competencies appropriate to the work are up to date.
  • Any other duties that are commensurate with fulfilling the role.
  • Working closely with both maintenance and technical/reliability teams to ensure the required number of trams are made available for service each day.
  • Issue Planned Preventative Maintenance task and reactive work tasks using the Asset Management Information System (AMIS).
  • Ensure that paper records/ the AMIS is kept up to date at all times with complete and accurate records of work completed, including materials used and time expended.
  • Lead, motivate, coach and develop the team to achieve their objectives and continuously improve.
  • Be a role model – be closely involved in shop floor activities, managing and motivating your team to deliver the work right first time.
