About the team

RSSB’s Risk and Safety Intelligences (RSI) Department manages and analyses health and safety data and undertakes risk assessments and risk modelling for the GB railway. Our products and services are used across the sector to inform decisions that affect the safety and health of rail workers, passengers and the wider public. We develop guidance and tools and support their use so that rail operators can manage risk effectively and efficiently. We work closely with our members and other stakeholders to support risk and evidence-based decisions and to deliver the industry strategy Leading Health and Safety on Britain’s Railway. Our team of safety engineers and data scientists ensures RSSB’s reputation as a centre of excellence in risk management, analysis and data-driven insights.

 

The role

The Lead Systems Safety Engineer will join our System, Safety and Health Directorate, providing specialist technical expertise to the industry on safety and risk management issues, and supporting their safety assurance activities. This includes undertaking risk assessments for sector-wide change, providing bespoke support to our member companies, and developing and promoting guidance and tools to support effective risk management practice.

Responsibilities

  • Provide competent specialist advice to support RSSB’s activities in: setting safety strategy, system modelling, requirements management & development of standards (e.g. EU Regulations and Standards, domestic legislation, Railway Group Standards).
  • Support industry safety assurance activities, including identifying hazards, assessing safety risk, and running workshops.
  • Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of risk assessment and risk management issues, within and outside the rail industry, through continuing professional development
  • Communicate relevant information on risk issues to stakeholders (e.g. managers, project leaders, health, safety and environment engineers and colleagues)
  • Analyse railway system safety risk and assist in communicating and promoting the understanding of the risk profile and the major risk contributors to the industry.
  • Review and advising on risk assessments and risk assessment methodologies developed by the industry.
  • Promote effective risk management practice both within RSSB and across the wider industry
  • Write high quality reports, guidance and tools to inform internal and external stakeholder activity.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Degree in mathematics, science, engineering or related discipline or equivalent experience
  • Effective working knowledge of risk assessment and risk management techniques
  • Familiarity with relevant regulations and standards
  • Working knowledge of risk assessment and risk management techniques
  • Awareness of safety assessment techniques e.g. HAZOP, FMECA, FTA
  • Effective communication skills with in conveying complex issues to non-technical users at all levels
  • Ability to work collaboratively, and influence at all levels.
  • You will have experience applying analytical thinking and problem-solving with an ability to understand complex information
  • Effective interpersonal and team working skills

 

Desirable

  • Experience of working in the rail industry
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation and standards e.g. CSMs, EN 50126/8/9
