Are you passionate about rail innovation and want to make a difference in the UK transport sector? If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you to join our Research team as the Head of Implementation here at RSSB. You will work closely with a wide range of industry stakeholders, academia, and government to ensure the successful deployment and benefit realisation of the cutting-edge research RSSB delivers on industry behalf.


As the Head of Implementation, you will be responsible for:

  • Lead activities after research has been completed to facilitate its take-up, working in particular with potential and early adopters
  • Steer the scoping and delivery of research to ensure the best chance of take up from the outset 
  • Engage with RSSB members, cross industry groups, and at industry events to promote the Research Programme, its value and relevant outputs  
  • Lead on implementation monitoring and reporting, capturing learning and success stories  
  • Developing and maintaining effective relationships with research project partners, funders, and end-users, facilitating collaboration and knowledge exchange
  • Monitoring and evaluating the impact and outcomes of the projects, identifying and addressing any risks or issues that may arise
  • Providing strategic guidance and support to the research project teams, fostering a culture of innovation
  • Representing the organisation at external events and forums, promoting our vision and achievements


To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • Experience in translating research findings into demonstrable impact, including in the journey to deployment and benefit delivery
  • Experience of working within the rail industry or a understanding of its challenges and opportunities
  • Project management, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills
  • A proactive, collaborative, and solution-oriented approach to work
  • People management skills combined with coaching and motivational capabilities.
  • A degree, ideally in a relevant scientific discipline.
